The value of the Edmonton Oilers has shot up from $550 to $1.1 billion US this year, reports Forbes magazines in its annual Business of Hockey report. Katz bought the team in 2008 for $170 million US. Reports Forbes: “Edmonton doubled in value year-over-year, going from a $550 million valuation to $1.1 billion. Verification from industry experts place the Oilers in the top quartile of the league in every important revenue category. In terms of local media revenue, the Oilers are among the top five teams in the league, alongside the Canadiens, the Maple Leafs, the Red Wings, and the Blackhawks.”
